Interestingly, as fast as it came, i have suddenly lost the desire to blog. Y? I dunno. Maybe its blogging apathy. Maybe cos i promised myself never to come out with anything unless its thought reflective and worth reading. I don't know what to say except that sometimes things can go awfully bad and when such things happen, you just don't know why it hits you or when will it go away.
Hicham El Guerrouj won the 1500m! Its been such a long wait. I have patiently followed the olympics since Barcelona in 1992. I would say that every 3 olympics marks the rise and fall of sporting heroes. In the past, Popov and Nemov reigned supreme in the air and under water. Now, its Hamm and Phelps. Gail Devers never did overcome the stroke of bad luck. I feel Paula Radcliffe's pain in losing her paet event. She was Britain's hope and glory. Table tennis was a Chinese whitewash, led by the incomparable Zhang Yining. Her youth and her prowess draws comparison to the other Great, Deng Yaping of ages past. Zhang Yining's speed is precociously brutal and there is no other player in the world circuit today who can defeat her convincingly. Badminton is another of my favourites and NO. I do not mention such things cos Singapore is taking part in them. I have much better things to talk about than to moan over spilt mik. In swimming, van Hoogenband is the only real competitor to the American vs Australian powerhouses. I don't think a lot of the people who read this blog follow the olympics but i believe that we all must watch the olympics. Not for voyeuristic pleasure nor for mindless entertainment but to pay homage to those who have dedicated their lives to being the best. Best in their field and best in the world. They have strove for excellence non pareil and it is rightly so that we pay respect to them. 108 years after Pierre de Coubertin founded the games, we have now returned to its homeland greece, although Athens is not Olympia, but nevertheless the meaning is not lost upon us. Welcome to Hellas, Home of Thuycidedes and his Peloponesian War.( Thanks Jon, couldn't be bothered to answer that simple question. ), Homer, Plato, Sophocles, Hippocrates, Pythagoras, Euripedes, Aeschylus, Paris, Achilles etc. Many many figures of mythology and antiquity stemmed from the fair islands of the cyclades and the sporades, many a young goatherd roamed the hills of Delphi and Thebes. Many a ship docked at the clue waters of Athens and Corinth, many an army trudged upon the rocks of Laconia and Macedonia. Odysseus laid his palace on Ionia as Troy laid its foundation on Ida. Pericles commandeered off the Acropolis as Leonidas fought to his death as thermopylae. Minotaur roamed Crete as Hercules roamed Tiryns. Who has not heard of Jason and the Argonauts nor has he heard about Perseus and Medusa. Greece, fair handmaiden of the Olympians above, your history and beauty surpasses many a nation and enchants many a generation. Though your glory days have passed, but ur influence will last. Cradle of Western Civilisation, Science, Music and Art, you have written yourself in the halls of eternity. Hellas, oh Hellas.
